Did you know…

Labor Day, the first Monday in September (today), is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. (from the U.S. Department of Labor)

It was the Industrial Revolution (in the late 1800s) with its 12-hour 7-day schedules that inspired a need for better protection of workers. The first Labor Day parade (10,000 marching workers) was in New York City in 1882. It took 12 years before Congress made it a holiday. History.com has Canada’s labor celebrations as the spark for that first U.S. Labor Day parade.

Ben Hogan is considered by many to be one of the greatest golfers of all time.

He was only 5-feet, 8-inches tall (the current top 5 in the world are all 6-feet or taller), went pro at age 17, and didn’t win his first tournament until he was 28.

According to the biography Ben Hogan: An American Life, Hogan would practice until his palms were blistered and cracked and then soak them in pickle brine to toughen them up.

If asked, what would you and your team say are your core values?

In the U.S. Marine Corps publication, "Sustaining the Transformation" (pdf), their’s are listed as Honor – Courage – Commitment. If you lead a team, the foreword (at a minimum) by General Krulak is time well-spent. It, along with the Fortune story "From Wharton to War", is great inspiration for creating a special team of people (as a leader with a title or not). And that’s what you want to be a part of, don’t you? A special team of people?

So many great teamwork points in the Fortune piece. We love the "bino" request. If you’ve got teenagers or college students, consider passing it along to them and then discussing it (we need them ready when they join us in the world).
