“Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em.”

–William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
English playwright and poet

Sales holiday…

Next Wednesday is Veterans Day in the U.S. (and Remembrance Day in several countries around the world) — a federal holiday.

Instead of taking the day off (if you’ve been given it), what if we thanked and honored those who served by working (and only veterans take the day)? Wouldn’t that be a stronger gesture of gratitude? What do you think?

(Of course, don’t forget to thank at least one veteran personally, too.)

Use this link to support the Paralyzed Veterans of America. A donation by 11.11.09 will double thanks to a challenge grant.

  1. James M. says:

Nothing can repay a veteran for the sacrifices they have made. No amount of money or thanks can dilute the memories of the living hell that is war. Nothing can replace the amount of time spent away from loved ones who remain at home. Nothing can bring back the lost friends and family members that died in the service of our country. However, simply acknowledging a veteran’s service and the sacrifices that accompany it is more than enough.
Veterans Day is also about the families of America’s veterans who remain at home. They are they ones who wait anxiously every day for any news of their loved ones who are abroad. The families of America’s veterans also deserve recognition on Veterans Day. Some have said goodbye to their loved ones for the last time. These families deserve our support. As a service to America’s service men and women, it is our duty to help their families who remain at home.
Our Health Clubs will be open on Veteran’s Day. If you visit our clubs, all non members will receive a free day pass. Veteran’s (everyone) are welcome!
    DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.

Also, don’t forget to fly your US flag. Veterans Day is one of many holidays appropriate for displaying our beautiful ‘stars and stripes’! Just be sure to bring the flag in, before it gets dark outside – or have adequate lighting for it.

I don’t agree with going to work on Veterans Day under any circumstances, especially if you already have the day off. In my opinion, it shows lack of respect and honor to the Veterans, as well as setting a bad precedent for employers. (Gee, if so many are coming to work anyway, why is this one of our paid holidays?) The backlash of this could be that the Veterans (and everyone else) would no longer have that day off.

I think that all of these thoughts are great. You all have shown what good people we have working here at Affina. It makes me proud that i can be a part of such a great team. We all Honnor Veterans and give thanks in anyway that we can.

If you do not have a choice about working. Take the days pay if you get it and donate it to any one of the great VA organizations helping our Vets pay their home utilities and feed their families.

A marvelous idea! And, to echo Pat’s thought (above), if you do have the day off, you might also visit your local cemeteries to pay tribute. Your local American Legion should have veterans’ graves decorated with the American Flag. If your children have the day off from school, be sure to take them with you.

  6. Craig says:

What a “novel” idea – give the verterans the day off for the holiday named for them and to regognize the sacrifices they have made. Our country gives a lot of “nice” words to the verteran, but little in fully funding and supporting actual programs of need.

I think that is an amazing thought. Too many times we forgot the true meaning of the holiday and just pass it off as a “yippee, I have the day off” and we forget to stop and think about the true meaning of the actual event. I am all for honoring those who have served in anyway to keep my country safe, and yes I want them to be honored, not me with a day off.

Who would be at the parade to honor those vets and let them know how much we appreciate them? If you have the day off, consider volunteering at the VA hospital or at a homeless shelter. It is amazing how many vetrans are homeless.

Wow, radical thought – and those are the kinds of actions that turn our heads and thinking. At Paraclete Press, where I work, we sell an uplifting patriotic CD, CALL TO FREEDOM, that we are offering for $12 (usually $16.99) as gifts for Veterans. Our men and women in uniform deserve that day off!!! So do their families. God Bless them all.
