Theodore Roosevelt was an advocate for "the life of strenuous endeavor."

He was a rancher, captured an outlaw, authored 35 books, served as president of the American Historical Association, led two major scientific expeditions for prominent American museums, served as president of the United States (started as the youngest in history – 42), won the Nobel Peace Prize, and was the father of six children.

After he left the Presidency in 1909, he went on a safari in Africa. When he returned, he ran for President in 1912 as an independent because he lost the Republican nomination. While campaigning, he was shot in the chest by a fanatic and ultimately recovered. His words at the time…

"No man has had a happier life than I have led; a happier life in every way."

When he died in 1919, the vice president said, "Death had to take him sleeping, if he had been awake there would have been a fight."

    I have read much of Teddy and his life. All of this is great material for sales. But, incredible for being a Man, Father and an American. Teddy came from an era when Men where Men and stood for what was right, with PASSION!!!!

    The great thing about Teddy Roosevelt was that fact that he acutally SOUGHT OUT those challenges. Those things, except for the gunshot, didn’t just suddenly arise.

    In today’s sales world we tend to go with quick and easy. Just take a look at all the spam emails. “quick this, easy that”. The true salesman welcomes and seeks out the higher level/sale/opportunity etc. etc. I agree with the previous blogger. The pendulum of sales is starting to swing the other way. With newer sales reps there is a sense of entitlement and not so much of paying your dues.

    I believe the “hardest DOOR to get through in sales is the CAR door.” I have come to believe that sales (field / telesales) is the most exciting job in the world. What I cannot believe is that the inept sales people who know how to manipulate the system are the one’s who win. My entire life I have been exposed to amazingly rich people and they took my advice. They called me after I left companies to find out where I was. The technology of today has made us a bunch of PEOPLE who hide behind voicemail, computer CRM software and ultimately we will lose sight of the old customer yelling and screaming at us if the product was not in stock for next day delivery. Sometimes the embarassment of missed delivery affords a seasoned salesperson a chance to upsell and get thicker skin. Yet as I watch the younger generation as I train them they will be happier because they don’t give a shit about the people but only the product / sale & a chance @ a new blackberry or MAC.
    I would love to write a column for your blogs.
